Message from Jeanne Baxtresser, Former Principal Flute New York Philharmonic

"Julie McGough is that rare combination of an outstanding teacher and extraordinary performer. Her remarkable skills as a flutist and artist inform and guide her ability to create a wonderful experience for a student of the flute.
I simply can't think of a better flute teacher and mentor for an aspiring student."

Learning. Teaching. Sharing.

The Flute Studio of Julie McGough focuses on building a strong musical foundation while fostering a life long love of music.

Skills we work on in a typical lesson include:

  • Creating a warmup routine

  • Scales and technique

  • Tone and Vibrato

  • Etudes

  • Duets

  • Solos

I believe that a strong foundation in technique and tone create the opportunity to excel in all types of music.  Students are expected to practice daily, using practice skills taught in lessons.

Students are encouraged to reach for new goals through studio recitals and masterclasses, and by auditioning for external groups, such as youth orchestras, PMEA honors ensembles and national competitions.  Auditions and competitions are optional and participation is based on student desire and ultimate future goals.

Current students perform in the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, PMEA honors band, PMEA district band and orchestra, PMEA region band and orchestra, PMEA state band and orchestra and National Flute Association High School Flute Choir and High School Soloist Competitions.

Graduates of The Flute Studio have gone into many fields after graduation, including, but not limited to music fields, such as flute performance and music education.

For students interested in pursuing flute performance or music education in college, I offer comprehensive college audition training that includes longer lessons, parent/student/teacher planning meetings, college selection advice, recommendation letters, and preparation for both the pre-screening auditions and live auditions.

We are a flute family!  Students in my studio are encouraged to be kind, supportive, and helpful to each other.  The group classes, flute choir, and recitals bring together these outstanding young flutists from many areas of Pittsburgh.  They become great friends and it is a joy to see them supporting each other inside and outside of the studio :)
